Salmon Fishing Guide – 5 Types of Salmon Species In WA

Salmon fishing is a popular activity for both tourists and locals in the Puget Sound area. Leading up to the summer and fall season, fishing charters are often booked up. There are 5 types of Salmon that thrive in the pacific northwest. Here are 5 types of species that are commonly caught:

  1. Chinook Salmon
    Also known as King Salmon, it is identified to have either a blue-green, red, or purplish color on its top part with spots mostly on its upper body and tail. It’s the largest of the Pacific salmon. It is also known to have high levels of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and other nutritional benefits.
  2. Coho Salmon
    Also known as Silvers Salmon, it is identified to have silver sides, dark blue backs, dark spots. As they mature, they can develop reddish and pinkish color throughout their body. These Species are closely managed under the U.S. regulations to maintain and improve its sustainability.
  3. Chum Salmon
    Also known as Dog or Keta Salmon, it is identified to have a silver blue green color with darker shades of spots dominating the top half of its body. As they mature, they can develop dark olive green colors, purple blotches of streak throughout their body. They are also known to have an elongated snout and enlarged teeth.
  4. Sockeye Salmon
    Also known as Red Salmon, it is identified to usually have reddish through most of their body along with greenish head. Unlike the other species of salmon, they don’t have as many spots on their body and are smaller in size.
  5. Pink Salmon
    Also known as Humpback Salmon, it is identified to usually have bright silver body with yellowish white belly. They can easily be distinguished by the protruding nature of their upper back area with large spots along the back and through its v shape tail. They’re considered to be the smallest in size.
