The lingcod fish is from the Hexgrammidae family and is also known as the Cultus Cod, Blue Cod, Green Cod, Buffalo Cod, Ling, and Greenling. The have a large mouth surrounded by sharp teeth. They can grow up to 60 inches long and weigh up to 85 pounds.
Lingcod Fishing is very popular in the Seattle and Puget Sound area due to the water’s rocky reef and strong currents. Puget Sound’s water terrain is an ideal environment to fish for Lingcod around May to June. There are many deep areas where we have been successful in catching Lingcod fish ranging from 26-36 inches long. Our fishing guides can help you navigate to some of these prime spots.
There are various fishing techniques to catch these very aggressive fish. Here are some Lingcod fishing tips from our experienced fishing crew:
Where and To Fish for Lingcods –
Lingcod likes to dwell in deep, dark, and rocky areas in towards the very bottom. Especially around heavy currents. Using an accurate marine sonar/radar can help you identify these terrains. Some popular areas are around Possession Bar on the south side of Whidbey Island, Elliot Bay’s breakwaters, Edmonds marinas, Point Evens of Hat Island, Alki Point area, and Toliva Shoal.
Fishing Gears for Lingcods-
There are many options for tackle rigs you can use. Metal jigs, live bait rigs, herring rigs, and lead-head jigs are just a few of the popular ones. The size of your rig will determine the size of the lingcod you’ll want to catch. For lures you can use live or dead bait. Lingcods will also eat plastic grubs and swimbaits although may require a little more finagling through the current.
